It is believed by many that the last words of the artist Vincent Van Gogh were "The sadness will last forever."
In this piece, I pay homage to the darkness we all will inevitably face, and refute those last words. For it is within darkness that the light shines most brightly. From the fertile ground of despair, the most vibrant blooms may grow. Though we each experience dark trials that test our souls, it is only through those trials that we see our own strength and light.
Hope. Hope is that light. A belief that the sun indeed will shine again. A faith that even as we are reduced by the pain of life to the barest of our bones, there is a part of us that can remain untouched. A part that can even blossom and enliven and bring forth beauty into the world.
Part of that belief starts with the simplest act of courage: to believe that the sadness will not last forever.
